"APPLIED JAINISM:" How to make decisions that will result in increased peacefulness, happiness and love for ourselves as well as for other living beings.

Book by Balabhadra Bruce Costain, Ph.D., (A revised and expanded edition of his M.A. and Ph.D. thesis from the University of Toronto.)

The text is comprised of two sections, the M.A. and Ph.D. thesis respectively. The first section entitled "Jainism: An Ethical Structure for Non-Violent Action" outlines the practical understanding of the four main principles of Jainism: that is, non-harming, limiting one's possessions, manifold view of reality, and the existence of cause-and-effect relationship. The principles are presented as a "invisible structure" within and by which humans can reduce harm to others (and one's self) and experience increased happiness in their lives.

The second section entitled "An Ethic of Unconditional Love for All Living Beings as the Basis for Human Development" elaborates the Jaina principle of non-harming. It addresses whether the principle is sentimental idealism, or if there is something more concrete in our nature that living according to the ethic assists in bringing forth in our attitude and daily interactions. Using both logical and philosophical insights from a variety of prominent Western and Eastern thinkers the thesis concludes the latter.
